The short answer is yes. But I would say more of the mindset of a homestead than a 100 acre 100% self sufficient dream property. If you can obtain a 100 acre self-sufficient homestead then yes you should 100% do it, but what this blog is about is the homestead state of mind.

Definition of a traditional homestead of the past:

A traditional American homestead refers to a historic and self-sufficient property established during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These homesteads were often located in rural areas of the United States and served as family-owned farms or ranches. They typically consisted of a farmhouse, barns, and outbuildings surrounded by cultivated fields and pastures. Homesteaders engaged in agriculture, raising crops such as wheat, corn, or vegetables, and keeping livestock like cows, chickens, and pigs for sustenance and trade. These homesteads represented a strong sense of hard work, resilience, and family values, as families worked together to provide for their needs and maintain a self-sustaining lifestyle. Traditional American homesteads were the foundation of many rural communities, contributing to the growth and development of the nation's agricultural heritage.

Definition of a homestead of today:

An American homestead typically refers to a small-scale, self-sufficient property located in a rural or semi-rural area. It embodies the values of self-reliance, sustainability, and a connection with nature. Homesteads often include a modest house or cabin, agricultural land for gardening and farming, and space for raising livestock. The occupants of a homestead typically engage in various activities such as growing their own food, preserving food through canning or drying, raising animals for meat, milk, or eggs, and using renewable energy sources like solar panels. Homesteaders prioritize simple living, embracing a DIY approach, and seeking to reduce their environmental impact. The spirit of community and sharing resources is often strong among homesteaders, fostering a sense of belonging and support within their rural neighborhoods.

As you can see not much has changed in 200 years. Reading these definitions I hope you can see most of these goals are obtainable at even a ¼ acre lot level. Maybe not 100% self sufficient or raising larger livestock, but even raising food for 30%-40% of your family’s needs is huge. But it’s more than that, a homestead state of mind is thinking of your property as a business and running your household with purpose. If you don’t see how the above definitions are possible for your home. Don’t worry I’m here to help.

‘Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their produce.
